What is non-emergency medical transportation

It is transportation for someone who has no medical emergency but still cannot simply get in a car and go. Here is who it is for, the four levels of service, and how it differs from a rideshare.

Who It Is For

Non-emergency medical transportation provides transportation for people who don’t have a medical emergency but need help getting to and from medical appointments, treatments, or facilities — often people with physical or cognitive limitations who can’t use regular transport.

Rainbow Road Transport offers vehicles equipped for disabilities and special needs: wheelchair-accessible vehicles, Stretcher-Alternative transportation, and other accommodations. The goal is a simple one — improve healthcare access for people with mobility challenges.

The Four Levels of Ground Service

Every trip is booked at one of four levels. The level decides the vehicle, the equipment, and how many Transportation Specialists we send — so it is the first thing we ask about.

Ambulatory
A steady hand for clients who can walk with some help.
Wheelchair
Securement-certified, door-through-door — standard chairs.
Bariatric wheelchair
The same securement-certified service, for bariatric chairs.
Stretcher-Alternative
Lie-flat transport for clients who can’t sit up — not an ambulance.
Not sure which one you need?

Describe how your loved one gets around and we will match the level, the vehicle, and the Transportation Specialists for you. Call (847) 585-8888.

The Trips This Service Covers

Tell us about any special needs when you book — a wheelchair, a Stretcher-Alternative, or medical equipment. Services include, and are not limited to:

  • Standard medical appointments
  • Dialysis
  • Chemotherapy and radiation
  • Rehabilitation sessions
  • Specialized clinics
  • Hospital discharge
  • Pharmacy trips
  • Mental health appointments
  • Adult daycare centers
  • Social service appointments
  • Airport pick-up and drop-off
  • Special engagements

How It Differs from a Rideshare

A rideshare driver meets you at the curb. A Transportation Specialist comes inside to get you, helps you to the vehicle, secures the wheelchair, and walks you inside at the other end — door-through-door, not curb-to-curb.

  • Transportation Specialists are PASS-certified — Passenger Assistance, Safety, and Sensitivity
  • Rainbow Road Transport is certified and insured under the State of Illinois
  • Wheelchair-accessible vans with fold-out ramps, four-point securement, and lap/shoulder belts
  • Clients and families get a live tracking link, text reminders, and driver-status updates

Transportation is scheduled 24/7 across Chicagoland, the entire state of Illinois, and long-distance to and from Illinois.
